Sépulchre - Ascent Through Morbid Transcendence album cover

To leave one destitute and bereft of inspiration and hope is an anomaly best described as a dismal consequence, something of such disfavor that none should ever covet; yet, there are those who find exception and solace in the semblance of death and disdain and SÉPULCHRE is one such entity. "Ascent Through Morbid Transcendence" takes you on a journey through misery and discord, all contained within the span of 4 tracks.

The EP begins with the track entitled, "Intro - Sepulcrascent" (a melding of Sepulchre and ascent) which is, in essence, pure atmosphere coupled with some percussive fx before jumping straight to "Invocation Of Plague Ridden Entity" an exacting and intense divergence from its predecessor, as the more deranged elements of the band can be heard in full. The song itself is unsettling, unhinged, and uncontested exhibiting some of the greater strengths of the band right out of the floodgate in the first full track-from the dynamic changes to the relentless aggression driven rhythms and event the eldritch string work, the song capitalizes on eerie elements native to the band's approach.

The guitars are closer in proximity to that of Black Metal rather than Death Metal, the tone is that of a chorus saturated rhythm whilst the lead has a distance reverb applied to it, allowing it to effortlessly glide over the tracks; the bass is a figure foreign and intimidating, that which is more essence than sound and it grows through great lengths to make its presence known filling in the lower end with ease and providing the much needed foundation for the other strings to build on top of; it's easy to determine the drums were played live which in turn makes them credible and engaging, as they captivate the listener with hastened changes and tight patterns; and lastly the voice is commanding, cathartic, and caustic bringing to mind motifs of scorn, torture, and rampage a perfect fit for the subject material.

SÉPULCHRE has now made their debut onto the world stage with the attention grabbing EP, "Ascent Through Morbid Transcendence" carrying with it great aptitude and questionable resolve; the guitars feel a bit to saturated with chorus which takes away from the bottom end and vocals, but the leads sound amazing using this same tone, as well the drums greatly tie together the different sections but feel unbalanced in the whole of the mix.  Taking the good with the bad this EP exceeds at first impressions drawing curiosity as to what a full album will consist of; the pacing is well met and it truly feels that you go on a journey from start to finish, a creepy but captivating addition to one's library.
