SENTINEL SIRENS is a Thrash Metal duo from Sweden. Weaving their way through everything from Power Thrash to Speed Thrash, they've created a broad, far-reaching concept album reminiscent of an old sci-fi/horror film, bringing chaos and fear to bear in order to seize the listeners' ear and make an album that will not soon be forgotten. Orbithon Wave is their debut album, released on April 28, 2023, via Chaos Records. The album starts with the ferocity of a stampeding herd. "Acrimony Of Gods" opens with lightning-fast guitar work and a bass line that matches the rhythm guitar. The drums are a blast beat lovers dream, only slowing down for the melodic part of the guitar solo, but when the guitar goes into shred mode, the drums amp back up with it. Wondering about the voice? Check out the scream at the end. That will show you there are no slackers in this band.
Mixed into the Speed and thrash Metal here are some almost Punk Rock stylings. The vocals sometimes go into that angsty, defiant realm, giving a lot of attitude. It also has something to do with the way the lyrics are delivered. I notice it most on "Orbithon Wave," though this happens in more places. I think it gives the band a more unique sound and feel, but you can decide for yourself. The riff on "Fury Of Atlantis" is one of my favorites on the album. There is just something about that chugging intro riff that repeats throughout the song that really catches my ear. The lead work on the song is good, the solo is a work of shredding art, but that riff hooks me. "Monstrum Pandemum" comes in a close second place.
SENTINEL SIRENS is different in how they deliver their Speed Metal. The guitars are, as expected, really fast. The bass and drums are every bit as fast, keeping time with the guitars and making sure the power never diminishes. The voice is what sets them apart. Heval has the pipes to go full-on Speed Metal screamer, but spends more time using a rapid-fire delivery in a lower register, straying away from the "stereotypical" Speed Metal vocalist. I was impressed with how that worked out better than I would have thought it could.
