Scar Symmetry

Recipe for Scar Symmetry: 1 part guttural Death Metal vocals, 1 part melodic Death Metal vocals, 1 part clean vocals, 1 part Prog Metal keyboards and a whole lot of savage drumming and guitar playing. Scar Symmetry is the perfect blend of beautiful Prog Metal and savage Death Metal.
Scar Symmetry is compromised of members from Unmoored, Incapacity, Solar Dawn, Carnal Forge, Dellamorte, Centinex, Diabolical, and Torchbearer; and that isn't even all of them - I mean Christ. They formed in 2005 and released their debut album Symmetric In Design via Metal Blade Records and now they are on Nuclear Blast Records.
First and foremost I can't believe that a vocalist is able to perform like this. I am just in utter disbelief that he can do a Nile-esque guttural Death vocals and then go to an absolutely flawless soft, clean, perfect vocal. The music on this album is absolutely all over the place with blast beats and keyboards. The highlights of this album are everything! There is no part that drags on or track that you wanna skip to get to the next track because you have to hear every single one.
If I have to pick highlights and the chief is breaking my arm here to make me pick some highlights, they would be Mind Machine, Oscillation Point, Retaliator and The Illusionist. If only ever Metal albums started out with a track as crushing and devastating as The Illusionist, good grief. From beginning to the end of this track it just non stop ass kicking. The best part of this track is just the pure energy that runs throughout. Another neck breaker of a track is Oscillation Point. The highlight of this track is the vocal trade off that goes on. A couple of words that are very guttural then a couple thrashy style and then back to guttural. Did I mention this happens 3 or 4 times in the song?
Another extremely awesome track is Retaliator. Now the highlight to this track are the time changes and the guitar solo. The song goes from a very chugging riff to some more offbeat and then to something I can't really describe. The vocals as usual are superb as well and blend excellently with the song. For the final highlight, I chose Mind Machine for almost this reason alone; the clean vocals are godly. The rest of the song is good too but the vocals made me have to pick my ass off the floor and change my pants at the same time.
I would recommend Scar Symmetry to fans of Into Eternity or Opeth. This release incorporates everything that you could ask for in a Metal release with the several different vocal styles and the different time changes. If you live in Europe then check them out on the 2006 edition of the Neckbreaker's Ball.
