SAHG are from Norway and have been active since 2004. They have released five albums before "Born Demon", and to be sure, none of them are bad. They used to be with more and other band members, but after losing their latest ones due to the success of their 2016 album "Memento Mori", the guys decided to go ahead as a trio. The result is what I am listening to currently. And to put you out of your misery, SAHG have delivered again!
"Born Demon" has that seventies vibe down properly, but also has another very important comparison to contend with. I am talking about another Power trio from before called BLUE MURDER, and their massively successful and masterful debut album "Blue Murder" specifically. Just listen to songs like "Evil Immortal" and the title track. The reason I feel obliged to mention this is that the vocals as well as the guitar parts that Olav Iverson is delivering on "Born Demon" eerily enough sound just like JOHN SYKES does on a regular basis. Is that a bad thing? Hell no! it just put up the rating I will be giving another full point. It would have been if they had copied them blindly, but that is definitely not the case.
You really don't have to worry, SAHG are not copying or turning into BLUE MURDER, but they seem to be honouring them. The production is a little less over the top as of their peers, but has more than enough body to let every note, every sound come to life. If you add to that the fact that SAHG still have the habit to incorporate doom and horror parts into their music, you can understand why I say the two bands are not the same. But as for the quality of the songs, this is way, way above par. This is outstanding. Mesmerising isn't a strong enough word for how contagious and addictive "Born Demon" is. I just can't stop listening to it. If I put it on repeat once more my wife is going to have a fit. Just to emphasise this, as I see it, SAHG have surpassed themselves once again.
I know, I am talking in superlatives, but even I f I wanted, I really can't find fault in anything I am listening to "Born Demon". And as music is emotion, I can only say that the start of 2023 has made me extremely happy. Sorry wife, but I need to listen once more. Oh , and the most fun song of the album is "Heksedans"!
