Sacrocurse - Unholier Master album cover

It's safe to say that Black and Death Metal are not my most favourite of genres so when I see a new release from a two piece band, I begin to think that maybe just two people are enough to make a record that you will like. When I reviewed an album by the band INVERTIA, that was not the case as it was a poorly produced release so have SACROCURSE fallen to the same fate with their new album? That's what I'm going to find out.

Originally hailing from Mexico and Turkey in their early days and now basing themselves in Monterrey in Mexico, this two piece band have so far released one demo tape, one split album and one full length called "Unholier Master"which is what I am going to be reviewing. Over the past two years they have been together since December of 2012, SACROCURSE have gone through a few changes in their line-up for both studio and live performances. The current line-up is ZK doing all the guitars and vocal work with LZ on the drums although what their actual names are I will never know.

One of the biggest grudges I have always held against the Doom, Black, Death, Thrash, Brutal, Stoner and Industrial Metal genres along with a few other genres of the same type is that often the music can be very second rate and very average in terms of the songwriting. Why? Well at times the music can be a bit lost in the mix, the production can often be a bit messy and most times you can never really hear what is going on and the same is said for the vocals as most times the singer just growls so you can never understand the words unless you refer to the album booklet for the lyrics. I think they also try to focus themselves more on just writing something that is really fast and they do not really seem to care about the actual performance itself.

So, where does this leave SACROCURSE? Are they in that trap or are they safe? The answer is, they are in that trap. That would not be so bad if the speed was a bit slower and you could actually hear the music and the vocals without wondering what the hell is going on but even if you iron out those bugs, you will still get a performance that ranges from average to mediocre or something different depending on your own individual tastes and preferences as a music listener.

As for someone like me, this is not really the type of thing that I would listen to so on that basis, I am going to score "Unholier Master" by SACROCURSE very low as it is not my cup of tea I am afraid but it will appeal to those who do like their music dirty, loud, fast paced and brutal with melodies and riffs that are guaranteed to start a mosh pit at a live show.
