Legends

Sabaton

There is not one wrong note on this album. All the songs are well balanced, very easy for the ears and most of all, of a very high quality. I can only applaud what I hear on “Legends”, as SABATON have once again given you a completely finished product that is ready to be admired.

When I first started to listen to SABATON, way, way back, I thought they were the easy going brothers of AMON AMARTH. Now, a number of years later, my thoughts have changed. The difference between these two is that I would use the music of AMON AMARTH to psyche up and enthuse my troops before going into battle. I would use SABATON's current album "Legends" afterwards in the inn or pub, to celebrate my victory. If I were to use SABATON as inspiration before a fight, the result would be that we would go into battle in high spirits but also pissed out of our skulls, and instead of fighting the enemy, I would ask them to join me in song and drink. The outcome could go two ways. The first one being that they would laugh away my request and simply chop our heads off. The second one being that they would be surprised but ultimately accept, and we would just be merry all together.

However, what I feel about it all doesn't reflect at all how good I think the music of SABATON is on "Legends", as there is not one wrong note on there. All the songs are well balanced, very easy for the ears and most of all, of a very high quality. In that respect I can only applaud what I hear on "Legends", as SABATON have once again given you a completely finished product that is ready to be admired. The sound is outstanding; the band is in form and everything I hear is as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Unfortunately, it isn't grabbing me by the balls or wherever you prefer. And the reason is that it is ready made, it is instantly recognisable and likeable. I compare this to RAMMSTEIN. You either love, like or loathe them, but you know which is which in an instant. The same goes for SABATON. They make music that is easy and sensible, but also instantly digestible. There are no hidden layers or surprises lurking underneath. "Legends" is what it is, and it doesn't grow on me with every listening session. It is like coffee. Some people like instant coffee, some like it percolated whilst others prefer it to be made straight from beans. I like my coffee as well as my music to have a little more depth. I have found out that that is the kind of music that is best for my taste. Alas, I didn't hear that on "Legends". As that is my personal opinion, you don't have to agree. Because, like I said, musically I can't fault what SABATON has done on this record. And that is what counts.
