Human Annihilation
Ruin
The past is the teacher for present and future ideas. This idea is behind every aspect of our daily lives, so you can think that music is done in such way as well. That thinking explains as well the passion for old Metal musical formulas, and why some bands try to sound as old as they can. So the ancient North American quintet RUIN, from Phelan (California), is back to teach some lessons for the youngsters with their new release, the album "Human Annihilation". As the experienced bands from underground usually do, they prefer to keep their music as near as the original ideas from the beginning, so it explains why they prefer to play Death Metal as crude and putrid as Old School bands as AUTOPSY and DISMEMBER from their earlier works. But there's some influence from old PARADISE LOST on slower parts as well, what gives their work a good set of rhythmic variations. Of course we all heard this kind of music thousand times before, but even in this way, they have their charm.
They use a raw sound quality, as it was usual in the beginning of Death Metal invasion on the earlier days of the 90s. Of course some Old School Death Metal fans will have orgasms, but something clean could have done miracles. It's not bad, but could be way better, preserving the filth only on the instrumental tunes, and creating a cleaner sonority. We can say that they know how to be creative on music, as songs as "Secreted Guts" (very good tempo changes, along with a solid work from bass guitar and drums), the traditional Death Metal tempos influenced by Hardcore on "Corpse Infestation" (another good moment from bass guitar and drums), the funeral dirge atmosphere of "Death Meditation Trance", the distorted riffs of the brutal "A Grisly Fate Awaits" will sever your necks. A better sound quality would do miracles, but I believe that RUIN's fans won't have anything to complain about on "Human Annihilation".
