Different Kinds of Losses
Rioghan
From Bandcamp, "RIOGHAN is a solo project performed by singer Rioghan Darcy. RIOGHAN was founded in 2019 and is based on Lapua, Finland. Rooted deeply in both Gothic and Progressive Metal, she sure should bring something interesting on the table." The album has ten songs. "Sight" is the first cut. The vocals are soft and backed with piano notes, as a despondent feeling settles in. About two minutes in, a much heavier riff drops. The sound is emotive, and powerful. It's catchy, even in its inherent sadness, and somewhat cathartic. "Promises" is a funkier and more Progressive offering, but still pretty dark and shadowy. The combination of clean female vocals with lush harmonies and harsh ones keeps the mood unsettling.
"Breath" is a shorter song, with solemn clean vocals, and Rioghan shows many faces with her vocals...this song is quite charming. The vocal harmonies are rich and clean, and ooze with emotion. "Home" is another tender and warm song, as any home should feel, with a heavy backdrop. Piano notes tease the listener, while a heavy riff feeds your passionate side. The chorus is again quite catchy, and I love the Djent elements from the bass and riffs. "Bruises" begins with an unassuming sound that turns deadly with harsh vocals and then retreats again. The harsh passages roar with anger while the quit ones calm your itch. The next two songs are shorter. "Time" is a mild and pleasant one, with some tones of grey every now and again, while "Innocence" is a little more dangerous, and tinged with some darker tones. I hear some NO DOUBT influence as well.
"Refection" is another heavy and punishing sound, at least musically. Even amidst all the anger of the harsh vocals, the clean harmonies soar in the chorus. The heavy accents throughout it tickle your Metal side. "Lights" have some electronic elements, and perhaps even some Pop sounds, for which the band and reviewer are unapologetic about. The sound is smooth and even a bit poignant. Her sultry voice is addictive. "Summer" closes the album. It embodies everything that is good about the season, sans the dreadful humidity...long nights, warm days, and making memories. Her soft vocals are calming, and take you back to moments in your life when everything was good. But there is also bad, as there is always bad.
This album crosses over many different styles of music, and that is probably the most interesting part about it...you never know what is coming next. Wonderful surprise lay around every corner. In all cases however, the vocals are wonderfully done, and the music backs her mood in perfect step. This was curious but very pleasing album to listen to.
