Trends in Metal subgenres are a great problem. The main reason is that you have a proportion of 15-20% of excellent and good bands, 15-20% that don't deserve to be mentioned as they aren't in a good musical level, and 60-70% that are in the mean value, and this is the reason that leads the fans to look for other Metal subgenres for something fresh and different. In the actual moment, one of these trends in on Doom Metal and Stoner Metal subgenres. The exhaustion is evident, and day by day, the genre is becoming weaker. The Austrian trio REFLECTOR is one of those good names that are above the norm, and "Turn" shows a good musical work.
They use the slow tempos and climatic ambiance of Doom Metal mixed with the greasy and nasty approach of Sludge Metal, creating something that is oppressive and aggressive, but done with charming melodies. The musical technique is not in a high level, what make their melodies more accessible to Metal fans that don't play a musical instrument. And their music is a fine mix between BLACK SABBATH climatic moments with the abrasive tunes of Sludge Metal. Yes, it's a good form of music, although it's nothing new at all. The sound quality of the album is something that is harsh and crude, but with the idea that the fans must understand what is being played. The organic feeling comes from the instrumental tunes that were chosen, but the mixing and mastering gave them a very good level of sound definition. It's a good work of the producer Bernd Heinrauch.
If the listener is into Doom Metal, songs as the funereal and nasty "Turning" (very good raw melodies and guitar riffs), the bitter energy of "Grim Reaper" (the vocals could be better, but aren't so bad when you become used to them), the somber slow tempos of "Leave the Rave" (where bass guitar and drums are keeping the rhythm abrasive and slow), and the somber and introspective "If You Go Away" are the ones that you must listen, although all songs are good. Slow and bitter, "Turn" will seduce Doom Metal fans easily.
