Return to Dust

Refiner

A fine mix between Deathcore, Industrial Metal, Groove Metal and other modern tendencies can be heard on this release.

Deathcore is a young Metal genre that evolved from Groove Death Metal, as a fusion of Death Metal, Groove Metal and modern Hardcore influences. It’s obvious many fans of older Metal genres complain a lot about it (due their lack of adaptation to what’s new, something explained by age, or in some cases, to the lack of a free mind), and its foundations are in acts as PANTERA, SEPULTURA, FEAR FACTORY, GODFLESH and others, and such influences are heard on “Return to Dust”, the 2-songs EP of REFINER.

It's hard to say that Deathcore should be a fine genre to describe the band’s music. Indeed, it bears traits of it, but one will feel the fingerprints of New Metal and Industrial Metal (that essentially don’t need to be as evident as it is heard on these songs). It’s a bit different, full of Groove Metal influences, but with a massive amount of weight oppressing the ears, with screams and grunts contrasting with clean voices (as heard on “Return to Dust”). It’s different, and maybe unusual for the genre, but the fans will love it. The sonority privileges the aggressive impact on the ears with modern and greasy instrumental tunes (especially on the guitars), but trying to be as clean and defined as possible to make the band’s songs understood. Be prepared, because it’s massive and heavy!

“Return to Dust” is nasty and aggressive, but filled with breakdowns and Industrial Metal traits contrasting with Groove Metal parts; and “Not the End” has a more direct and straightforward appeal, with abrasive tunes with hypnotic tempos. In some senses, it bears some experimental traits that are unusual, making things better for the fans. REFINER works in a way that modern Metal fans can’t resist, then hear to “Return to Dust” and enjoy. By the way, on the band’s Bandcamp, instrumental versions of both songs are available.
