This is the first full-length album from the Stoner/Doom Metal out of San Diego, California. They began in 2010 and have had a cult following ever since in the west coast of the good old USA.
Just look at that cover, that is just freakin awesome! It oozes Stoner Metal to its very core! I always loved those types of covers and well you never know what the band can dish out though. You really can't judge an album by its cover to be perfectly honest. Still, this band delivers in some many aspects. The cover is just the beginning of all of this!
Evidently some people with compare them to another West Coast Stalwart, NEUROSIS. Well they are some similarities but I felt RED WIZARD didn't stick to one style of music. They weren't afraid to push the envelope and dig deep in the Doom Metal genre. They also go in many different directions, sometimes it sounds like the Psychedelic Rock of bands like PINK FLOYD (circa Live at Pompei), really crazy and just psychotic sound (on the groovy ''Cosmosis'') sometimes it can revolve around Progressive Rock, I can tell with some of the influences on some song could come from bands like KING CRIMSON and GENTLE GIANT.
The three song opus at the end of the album is pretty much outstanding. I really loved the fact that the second part of the song is a short instrumental and it's a wicked intro for the last part of the song. It could have been one very long and drawn out song but I felt it was great to separate in 3 equal parts. It has that very bluesy feel about it, a bit like the forefathers of Metal (like Tony Iommi said, the origins of metal are deeply rooted in Blues Rock). This reminded me a lot of bands like BLUE CHEER amongst others.
Another thing I wanted to add is the fact that we have Harmonica on the opening song. You don't hear that much of this instrument nowadays and I felt it was a nice touch on one hell of a opening track. It's bluesy, it's rocking, its just gives you the pleasure of hearing music the first time. I don't know how to describe it but it gets you right in the feels. Thank you RED WIZARD!
A solid release!
