Re Armed - Ignis Aeternum album cover

Boy this one is confusing, in a very good way.  There is a lot of different styles on display here, from a band described as a mix of Melodic Death and Thrash.  Well maybe in the past, but there is more going on that either genre would suggest.  Yes there are some suitably gruff growls going on, there is pace a plenty, punishing riffs and pounding drums, but not all the vocals sound like a daemon from the pits of hell, there is some really clear metal vocals on display. There is a in places a very modern sound, almost Symphonic passages and fills.  A well rounded sound with something for the mot discerning death-head, thrasher or metal-head to get their teeth into.

To give you a little history, the band formed in 2001 in Kerava, Finland, practiced in the "Gothenburg Sound", Melo Death to you and I, over 3 previous albums their sound has developed and rounded into that we hear on their 4th Album "Ignis Aeternum" (Fire Forever). There are songs which are very "Death", such as "Resistance" and "The Hollow Lights", built on the guttural growled vocals of Jouni. Elsewhere as showcased by the opening pair of "Drive Within" and "Beyond The Horizon" which meld the Metal and the Death is a spirited and fist pumping way.

"Ode To Life" for me is a stand out track. From the start with the groove laden bass intro, into a wailing guitar break, this modern sounding track, weaves and changes pace like the best Symphonic Metal.  But the vocals stand out.  The guttural is toned back to clear growl, with some sympathetic backing vocals, and to top it off the soloing is out of this world. The modern feel continues through "Eager To Collapse", which is built on an intricate display of drumming from Liro, and again more intense soloing.  The guitar duo of Oskari and Allan know their chops.

The only slight wrinkle in this otherwise excellent set of songs in my opinion is "Voyager". This one only ever so slightly is not quite up to the high bar set by the rest of the album.  I cannot actually put my finger on why, but it was for me the weakest track on the album.  But it only loses one mark for it.

Give this a listen, bang your head.  ROCK!
