Flame Of Rebellion

Formed in 2014, PURNAMA is a Blackened Death Metal band, coming from the Czech Republic. "Flame of Rebellion" is their second record, following 2017's "Lioness". This 34-minute long record moves through several sounds, adding some Gothic and Prog Metal influences in the mix, avoiding taking predictable turns. "It's Coming" begins the record with a myriad of samples, deep ambience and demonic voices. Some subtle percussion slowly builds tension, until the track explodes in layered delayed guitar and symphonic synthesizers. An organ adds a Gothic, almost horror movie soundtrack feel as the drums lay down a military march. It certainly feels as if some kind of warmongering creature or spirit is being invoked. The track gives way perfectly to "Nature Will Remain", a violent banger with some nasty riffing and aggressive drumming.
"Rebellion" has an almost math-y intro. Václav Lhota shows a jazzy influence with his playful ride cymbal accentuations. Some subtle vocal variations show this band does not fall into the trap of the monotone growling. From midpoint onwards, the track goes through several symphonic breaks with synth ambiance. A proggy and dramatic track, subtly reminiscent of OPETH or NE OBLIVISCARIS. A Post-Rockish guitar intro throw us into a blast beat assault in "Light in the Void". The song moves between luminous, PELICAN-esque atmospheric guitar sections and brutal, breakneck-speed Death Metal. It certainly lives up to its title with sheds of light amidst darkness and chaos. Around the three-minute mark, there is a groovy breakdown with mysterious melodies. "Promethus" brings back the symphonic elements with its theatrical introduction. A memorable melody that gets reprised several times throughout the track in creative ways. A fun proggy track that plays around with time signatures, never sacrificing complexity or accessibility, striking a balance between them.
Another banger comes next, in the form of "Dark Flames". This jazzy affair is a highlight for Lhota with his tom-heavy drumming, feeling a little closer to CYNIC. The lead guitar work is outstanding and very melodic while keeping things heavy. The vocal layering creates a sense of despair. This is follow by "Phoenix", a fast-paced track, always on edge, filled with tension and some shredding action. "Song for Victory" closes the record on a high note. A chameleonic and dynamic track with more proggy undertones that keeps shifting between sections and rhythms. An appropriate closer, expansive in sound. It ends with a brief reprise of "It's Coming" bringing the record full circle.
