Well, I think that I can honestly say I have never encountered Mathcore be... but I am very interested and intrigued in the subgenre. What a better way to expose myself to a new style, than to dive head first in with an exciting new band on the scene. PUPIL SLICER is a young three-piece band from the UK with their debut album "Mirrors". The artwork is a bit different, playing into the title, with mirrored images cracking off in different directions.

Opening is "Martyrs", coming in with an ominous drawn out introduction before the full throttle assault of the main body. Fast, furious and high octane, even the momentary respite is still an intense affair, it leaves you breathlessly anticipating the next track. "Stabbing Spiders" is just absolute chaos, dissonant chords and a tempo / time signature that just did not really complement each other at all. As we arrive into "Panic Defence" my sense of direction is totally lost, I have no real idea where the album or tracks are going; it is a bizarre album... But I can only assume that this is all part of the genre.

If there is nothing else to be said, there is bundles of energy and intensity from start to finish, all members of the band have succeeded in delivering an untiring performance. This is further demonstrated in "Vilified", the minute and half whirlwind track is just sheer unadulterated energy. "Wounds Upon My Skin" stood out to me, it seemed to have a much more industrial ambience and feel to it, I'll admit that is much more up my alley! For those with more of a tendency towards Prog, think GOJIRAesque styles, make sure that you check out "Mirrors Are More Fun Than Television", coming in just shy of 7 minutes it's "Mirrors" longest track and really is a great demonstration of the bands style. The dissonance and coordinated chaos, it really is a fantastic track that just acts as a journey. The final track "Collective Unconscious" is another epic that just continues to show of the talents of the members of PUPIL SLICER, the vocals of Kate and Luke really work wonders in tandem throughout, each complimenting the others style to create a fabulously well rounded effect.

Overall, there are a lot of good things to say about the album. It is wonderfully chaotic, well put together and it is clear as day that the band members are all thoroughly skilled in their respective crafts. Whilst the style may not necessarily be to my personal tastes, I can see why some may enjoy it. There is a voice that speaks to all metalheads, and that is the shared love of the music, this breaks the boundaries of genre and I can hear it in "Mirrors".
