The dissolution of the band Nonsense brought about the creation of progressive rockers Pulse and their debut Impulse, a melancholic album that is a bit of a slowburn. Musically there are a lot of interesting elements to this release and some definite talent behind the instrument playing. Vocally and lyrically is where the album struggles for me. When the instrumentals kick in on the first song "Forsaken" I was immediately drawn in by the mystical, moody sound, however, when the vocals come in is where I began to lose a little interest.

Upon initial listening, I experienced Tool vibes from the instruments and, of course, the melancholy mood. I imagine the songs on this album would be perfect for a film, such as a thriller or a scene where the character is experiencing a life-changing dilemma. It's got a mysterious tone to it that's intriguing. One of the standouts on this album is "Resistance." My favorite part is probably the solo, but the chorus is also very catchy in this one. By no means a happy song, this one is at least a nice break from the doom and gloom without losing any of the moodiness that I like about this band.

"Through this depth I die alone...through this depth I get no hope" vocalist Carlos Torres sings on the fourth track "Depth." Torres' voice is brooding throughout not just this song, but all of them. He is clearly experiencing heartache and abandonment as he sings about someone's absence. His word choice in many of the songs exudes feelings of loneliness and sadness. He uses words in this song like "silhouette" and "shadow," and "dark depth" that create strong imagery of someone who is struggling to be alone.
Torres and Carlos Belmont from their former band's song "Key," which is a good move to help bring in any fans from their past. The two have also added bassist Daniel Garcia and drummer Kristian Janssen to the band to complete what they began with this album.

While each song by itself absolutely has great instrumental parts, the album as a whole seems to drag. It's one where I feel almost like I could vibe to it on a rainy day, but it's a little too sad and lonely in its entirety. I wanted something a little sped up or uplifting thrown into the mix.
