Kali
Ptolemea

PTOLEMEA is not only the name of the band of Portuguese band leader Priscila Da Costa, it also refers to a circle of Hell for traitors, as described in Dante's Inferno. As a band it was launched in 2018. What I have hear with "Kali" is the second album of this Alternative Rock band, the debut being "Balanced Darkness" from 2023. I haven't heard that one, but I have a feeling that is about to change, as to me what PTOLEMEA brings on "Kali" is nothing less than interesting, and at times even bloody good. If you want a reference, I have a very faint one, which is the debut album of SINEAD O'CONNOR "The Lion And The Cobra". No, this isn't the same kind of record, but it does have the same kinds of undertones from time to time.
And I have to say, the English pronunciation of Priscila Da Costa is faultless and precise, and she able to translate her emotions is a very good way using the English language. However, I still prefer the songs where she either sings in her native Portuguese tongue (for example "Guilhotina") or not at all, just making noises. On "Andhera", that is the case, and it not only is the most impressive song on the whole album, it also is the Heaviest by far. These examples are to make you realise where to my ears the emotions run ragged, where they shine above anywhere else. This is when PTOLEMEA changes from decent into a good band, and sometimes even a brilliant one. In these moments it is hard not to be amazed, not to be hypnotised and to be enchanted by the music on "Kali".
Before is started writing this review I was still in doubt as to what kind of rating I was going to award PTOLEMEA for their "Kali" record. But since starting the music yet again I simply began to hear and experience how profound and deep this record is reaching me, how I just can't stop listening to it. I do realise that this is the sixth time I have decided to listen to the album, and every time it just gets that little bit better. That, my friends, is a real testament that I am dealing with a diamond in the rough, one that I intend to shape and enjoy as often as possible. "Kali" gives me reason to look out for "Balanced Darkness", the debut album of PTOLEMEA.
