A Blunt Description of Something Obscene
Protosequence
Canada had a strong Metal scene between the end of the 70's and the middle of the 80's, but something happened that little was heard from there for a long time. But since the coming of CRYPTOPSY on the 90's, many Death Metal acts arose there, keeping the flames of Canadian Metal alight. And the quartet PROTOSEQUENCE is a very good name, as can be stated after hearing the EP "A Blunt Description of Something Obscene".
They could be called a Brutal/Technical Death Metal in the same vein of CRYPTOPSY, SUFFOCATION and others, due the Jazz technical influence in many parts. But these guys are courageous, doing things on their own, as using some parts with clean voices, Progressive Rock influences and deeper introspective elements (as can be heard clearly on the beginning of "A Blunt Description of Something Obscene"), some touches of Melodic Death Metal and those piggish screams that the fans are anxiously waiting in the middle of the technical and oppressive massacre they unleash. Yes, their work is really excellent! The sonority was created in the same model of bands of such Metal genre: clean and defined, searching for dry instrumental tunes, but overloaded on aggressiveness. All works in the best way for the band. And their expressivity becomes easy to understand.
"Savagery in Fundamental Behaviors" shows excellent guitars and bass guitars duets, showing that technique and brutality will get along during the entire song. On "A Blunt Description of Something Obscene", many contrasts can be heard between oppressive brutality and some clean parts that support a 'noir' feeling (and what a great drumming can be heard, along very good vocals, changing from clean tunes to grunts, and for other tunes). "Bleeding the Alienist" is focus more on the technical approach of the band, as "The Pale" is showing a traditional Death Metal set of elements (even with its rich technique). The other four songs are the same ones, but without vocals, so the fans can use it for a karaoke party (if their vocal chords can support such low grunts without becoming blood shreds).
"A Blunt Description of Something Obscene" is a very good release, indeed, but it raises a question: what is PROTOSEQUENCE waiting for? They need to release an album as soon as possible.
