PERNICION is a two-man Death Metal band from the United Kingdom. "Seek What They Sought" is their debut EP.

The first thing I noticed about this EP was how long the tracks are. This record is almost a half an hour long, and there are only five songs. It was intimidating at first, and I was dreading the long, tedious tracks, but I soon understood why they were so long.

These songs are filled with different sequences and themes that extend them to long lengths while maintaining interest in the listener. It's not boring Death Metal with little substance that drones on forever. It's Death Metal that is listenable despite the song lengths.

One theme that adds substance is the atmosphere made by the dual guitars. It reminds me of INCANTATION or MORBID ANGEL. In fact, there are some moments that sound like they were pulled from THE ZENITH PASSAGE's "Cosmic Dissonance" EP. This atmosphere is seen in every track, but it shines in "Mantorok" the most.

There isn't much else going on in the music other than cool atmosphere and dissonance. Other than the songwriting, the lead guitar is the only thing saving this music because of its extremely effective use of basic melodies. The riffs are all good, but they aren't anything to marvel at. If anything, this music isn't original, but it is good.

While the riffs are not original at all, the compositions overall are great. The songwriting on this EP is fantastic, and this is the biggest redeeming factor. The riffs are placed where they should be, and the atmospheric dual guitar attack adds to the overall product.

Out of the five tracks on this EP, "Tome" stands out the most. It has a very eerie melody that is nicely complimented by the atmosphere that seems to persist throughout every track on here. While the riffs on here are still not original, they are the best ones on this small album.

"Seek What They Sought" is a good EP. It's nothing new or exciting, but it holds massive potential. It's like a doomier SULPHUR AEON. If only they could branch out from the unoriginal riffs and make something more. In the meantime, however, this isn't bad, and it shows a lot of room to expand as a band.
