PARAPHILIA is an American death metal band coming out of Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2020 they released their first EP in 2021, a four track effort titled Primordium of Sinister Butchery. The EP features a cover of a killer DEICIDE track called They Are the Children of the Underworld. Both musicians making up the band have been and are currently involved in multiple projects throughout the metal world. Everything from live performances for other bands, programming, to lyrics and vocals and all instruments. A very solid duo of experience that comes across within the material they release.
"Coruscation" is a wave of destructive force that hits you directly off the bat and does not let up the assault until you are depleted and broken, yet wanting more. Fierce drumming and deep low toned riffs dominate the opening to the track, giving way to a more technical approach and chunky, corroded guitar riffs. "Stelliferous Unmaking" is just a nasty piece of work, in a good sense. Death metal meets hyper blast. The vocals are the essence of a vile and putrid spitting demon that demands to be heard. Intense work from both of the collaborators on the track. Relentless and pure from the first second to the end basically describes the entire release. Three songs in and for myself, this EP can be mentioned again in eight months as a top 5 brutal death metal release of the year.
"Virial Entropy" once again brings the hellfire and intensity as indicated but listen to the riff transition followed by the on point drums staying on top of and paving the way for the transformation of the music. Really a pleasure to listen to. "Supernal Rebuke" is something all on its own, a calming effect to the guitar at times, mind numbing pace, a slaughter of vocal cords and a trembling, deep bass line coincide within five and a half minutes. That is just tipping your toe into the lava to test the temperature of the sound wave created. At this point, it's all on the table for the remaining tracks up to "Eaten", the BLOODBATH cover. The song and the band itself is pure enjoyment to any metal head. Burial, cremation, adrift at sea...why not eaten as a form of remembrance? A modern form of brutality to a classic. A well played track by musicians in tribute to a song put together by great musicians. Enough said.
Nothing but recommendations to others in the metal community to give this release some time in their day. There is a lot to appreciate within the music no matter what genre you want to label it as, good metal is good metal. Well produced, clear and unforgiving. Give credit where credit is due.
