The Memory of Death Given Form
Paraphilia
“This album sounds like it’s actually on fire.” -Some random redditor. In researching this band, I came across the opening statement and I could not help but lead with such powerful words. PARAPHILIA comes to us from the Great Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon, USA. To set the stage, Portland is a city much like Seattle, indeed, considered its sister city in the Pacific Northwest. Side by side these cities have been a powerhouse of great music throughout the years. Many great names come from such places, and sometimes names you’ve not of heard yet but you should. This is a place ripe in art culture, music culture, and renowned for its craft beer. The music that comes from here is rich in artistic expression. It is made by people who have an inherent need to create. As natural as the need to breathe air, people of the Northwest need music culture. Maybe it is in the coffee; maybe it is in the craft beer. But some of the worlds best artists and music has come from here.
PARAPHILIA is a brand of Death Metal that comes in big. In the time it took to write this review my face was sufficiently melted. The album stayed true to classic Death Metal, creating a sound that never allows you a moment to catch your breath. The vocals were large and in charge, and powerfully growled. The guitars and drums created a wild ride of a melody, one that rises and never falls. “Stellifero” - The haunting melody that lulls you in to start, jumps violently into a thrashing guitar melody and a drum beat that keeps time perfectly. This whirlwind of sound drills hard into your brain with powerful precision. Leaving you unsure what you just witnessed, but changed somehow by the storm that just blew through. “Viral Entropy” - I just love the way PARAPHILIA’s song intro’s sound. If you have ever taken psychedelics, you know that feeling when the mushrooms start to hit? The way this and other songs intro portion is, is a similar feeling as your brain waves rise with the sound. It’s wild, and might overtake you, It’s passionate, a wave of fire. “Supernatural Rebuke” - A classic Death Metal marching Drum beat welcomes us this time, this continues into a fast-paced song that leaves you teetering on the edge of madness. Fully compounding your descent at the halfway point with a wall of guitar riffs that leave your brain reeling.
“Thanatical” - This song brings us to a more contemplative place. A place where a gruff voice growls its song at us, to menacing and powerful guitar riffs. The points these riffs punctuate orchestrated deftly to create musical perfection. The vocals lead on to grasp us in Death Metal’s grip. “Eaten” - If a song ever was the period to a sentence, it is this one; the punctuation of sound. The wild ride that is this album has dumped you here. With Vocals that rage violently at you, and arguably one of the best composed pieces of guitar I’ve heard in some time (throughout the album, not just this song.) This album has been an absolute joy to review! The compositions on guitar are absolutely incredible and worth the time to enjoy. The vocals compliment that amazing guitar just as incredibly. I highly recommend this album. If you are reading this, listen to this album. You’re welcome. But the true thanks go to the creators of such a well-produced album as “The Memory of Death Given Form”.
