Mysterium

Paradox

The songs on “Mysterium” are all of a very good standard, all have a tale to tell, and are without exception well written, properly played and expertly recorded.
September 20, 2025
In the past I have ignored a lot of the Teutonic Thrash metal bands in favour of the Bay Area ones. That is a decision I made a long time ago, and in the years since I have been working for Metal Temple I have come to the conclusion that it was the wrong choice. I therefore have deprived myself of a lot of good Thrash Metal bands over the years, whilst denying those bands the recognition they obviously deserve. PARADOX is one of those bands. I am about to review the 26 September 2025 release of "Mysterium", their tenth (!) studio album since the start in 1986. Well, they actually began making music in 1981, but before their current name they were know as OVERKILL (1981-1983), MANIAC (1983-1984) and WARHEAD (1984-1986). So, for 39 years they have been making noise that I ignore. But, no more! There is no denying that "Mysterium" is almost an hour full of high quality music. Thrash Metal is the main ingredient, but you will also hear Speed and Power Metal, just to make the songs sound a bit more interesting. What surprised me most though is the fact that all of this is done by one man on his own. to write 57:34 minutes of music when your latest album "Rearrange The Past" was only released in April 2024 is quite amazing. That was something people expected in the seventies and early eighties, but since then that is an anomaly. But let's get to the music; PARADOX plays typical Teutonic Thrash Metal with galloping rhythms, fast paced music and a tight but enjoyable sound. What I de feel about most German Thrash Metal bands is that you always get the feeling that when they stop playing, they are going to ask you to join them in enjoying a beverage of your choice afterwards. And yes, preferably that is beer. The songs on "Mysterium" are all of a very good standard, all have a tale to tell, and are without exception well written, properly played and expertly recorded. Plus, I do really like the way that PARADOX have decided to start the album. What an impressive intro to "Kholat", the first of many very good songs. They range from fast and furious ("One Way Ticket To Die") to a little slower and well thought out ("Mysterium"). You can hear everything in every song, making the transparency very obvious and welcome. I can tell you for sure that if you are already a fan of Teutonic Thrash Metal, you will love what PARADOX has to offer on "Mysterium". And if you are like me, you need to stop meandering and go for the experience of exploring and discovering how pleasant this album is. And when you do, you will go on more explorations. Of that, I am sure.
