From their EPK, "Coming out of Beijing, China, Progressive Metal quartet OU (pronunciation: "O") look to emerge onto the music scene with a debut studio album that although can bring to mind elements from many different kinds of music and bands, it was never limited by trying to fit into a particular niche." The album contains eight tracks.
"Travel 穿"opens the album. It begins with a heavy, partly electronic sound with female vocals. Most of the melody comes from the vocals, while the guitars stir in with electronic elements to make a soup underneath. The combination of the heavy bottom end with the soaring melodies in the vocals is surely an interesting sound. "Farewell 夔" begins with a lighter sound and some strong melodies. The intensity of the drummer is matched with heavy bass thuds and more electronica. "Mountain 山"opens with staccato Djent tones from the instruments while the vocals are dreamy. The melody they build here is both unique and pleasing. It turns darker close to the half-way mark, but soon returns to the previous path. The band show their strong musicianship here, especially Chris Cui on the bass.
"Ghost 灵"is a shorter offering that begins with light and steady notes and a somber little melody. Smooth, mellow tones abound, especially from the vocals, which are barely there. "Euphoria 兴" begins with more light and airy tones. That feeling of euphoria really comes through. Close your eyes and let it wash over you. It is invigorating while it mostly flies under the radar of what you might consider music. More ambient tones rule here, but the subdued melodies draw you in to its core, like a moth to a flame.
"Prejudice 豸" opens with heavier elements, but that melody stays in the forefront. The vocals are mostly whimsical but Lynn Wu can belt it out in the upper ranges. It takes a mellow pause after the half-way mark, with clean guitar tones before returning to the heavy staccato tones. "Dark 暗"begins with heavy thuds in the instruments but more of those ethereal vocals. Wu stretches out for the canopy, but ends up in the stars. Dark tones are tempered with celestial melodies that linger in your ears. "Light 光"is, as expected, a pleasing closer. Light and airy tones provide a welcomed cool down.
What a strange but uniquely pleasing sound from a band who is not afraid to explore the many boundaries of Progressive Rock/Metal. They can obviously play with the best of them, dipping in and out of complex passages with a steady hand, and Wu's voice is both pretty and dangerous at the same time. The album is chocked full of chunky and hefty sounds with substantial weight, but also with charming and catchy melodies. This is a very strong debut album from the quartet from Beijing.
