Indifferent Universe
Ordalie
From Bandcamp, “ORDALIE’s new album, “Indifferent Universe,” delves into the profound insignificance of humanity within the cosmic expanse, portraying a chilling void, stars devoid of soul, and an overarching sense of cosmic apathy. Collectively, the album offers a poetically immersive exploration of the human condition, grappling with the stark and mysterious grandeur of the universe, as it unfolds themes of existence, cosmic terror, and the perpetual quest for meaning.” A short “Intro” leads to “Dans ce néant glacial.” The sound explodes like a bomb, and is very thick and dissonant. The vocal vary from deep gutturals to spoken word, and the entire song sound like a soundtrack to the apocalypse. “Pillars of creation” also has a dark and harrowing sound, as well as a deeply hopeless and depressing sound. As it continues, the depression worsens, to the point that you just want to give up. “Where time and space part ways” is another thick and overgrown song with tones of anger, rage, and more depression. If you let this sound in, it slowly begins to change your perspective on the outside world.
“An epitaph for reason” is close to eight minutes, which is plenty of time to develop a horrid, hopeless sound. A droning dissonance also emerges, and it strong as iron, fortifying the dark side of human existence. “Quasar” has some odd chord progressions, showing the versatility of Ioldar’s writing. When he steps in the gas, it rolls forward like a fireball, but when he eases his foot off, you can hear a real expansion in sound. “Void meditation” closes the album, and that is what it sound like…what you might hear in the great void of a black hole. Overall, this was an excellent album, especially considering this came at the hands of one composer. He painted a picture of darkness, of torture, of anger, and of hopelessness, and it was all done with a twist of evil.
