The Obscure Sibyl
Oneiric Celephaïs
ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS are a technical Death Metal band from Florence, Italy. Formed by Federico Giusti and Emiliano Burchi in 2015 (initially as CELEPHAÏS), they previously released a demo containing three songs and now their first EP "The Obscure Sibyl". Band name and EP are inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS play melodic and technical Death Metal as influenced by bands like DEATH or SPAWN OF POSSESSION. "The Obscure Sibyl" was released by Gore House Production and has a total length of approximately 25 minutes.
The first three songs are all conceptually linked by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. While "The Eldritch Dark" is an opener of about one minute, "The Aeon Of Death" shows the approach of ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS to Death Metal: a journey of varying pace, melodic and technical comprehensive guitar solos, hammering drums, and bass lines that connects all together. Federico Giusti's excellent growling vocals add something extra to the sound of ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS. "From Beyond" continues with the same patterns, a bit darker and heavier than "The Aeon Of Death", with catchy guitar riffs and solos. "From Beyond" may have the potential to become a fan favourite. "The Aeon Of Death" is also available on YouTube. Check out the link below.
"Voluspá" means "Prophecy Of The Seeress" in Old Norse. It is one of the best known poem of the Poetic Edda and consists of approximately 60 verses. It tells the story of the creation of the world up to its coming end (the Ragnarök) and its recreation. Main focus is on the coming end of the world. With that background, it is easy to understand why "Voluspá" has a length of more than 12 minutes. For me, "Voluspá" is the absolute highlight on "The Obscure Sibyl", since ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS are able to create a unique atmosphere in sound, harmonies, and melancholies fit to the theme. The song is well structured and musically all four band members are at their very best. Especially impressive are the breaks in between from the high-paced sequences to the slow and melancholic parts. Emiliano Burchi on drums performs simply outstanding in this song.
"The Obscure Sibyl" is a very good debut release of a very promising band. ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS play a very mature technical Death Metal and are able to combine their strengths as musicians with lyrical themes resulting in a triptych of songs dedicated to H.P. Lovecraft and a composition that picks out the Norse mythology as a central theme. Their sound is dominated by melodic and technically skillful guitar sequences, excellent and versatile play on drums and overarching growling vocals that mixes everything well together. "The Obscure Sibyl" is very well produced and mixed. Fans of technical Death Metal will look forward to the future releases of ONEIRIC CELEPHAÏS.
