OMINOUS RESURRECTION is a Black Metal band formed in New York City, USA. They have released one previous full-length album in 2014. Now, six years later, they are back, with "Judgement," which contains seven new tracks. "Judgement" leads off the album, with ominous bell strikes and something building in the background. Cold winds howl, while vague voices can be heard in the wind. "Heir to the Throne" has some pretty rudimentary production value, and from the opening notes, it's clear that this is old school, FWOBM kind of stuff. The riff repeats in a pattern, while the vocals are mostly guttural utterances that can't be made out. The riff changes a bit, to this mesmerizing sound that draws you in.

"Ashes of Holocaust" features some heavier guitar strikes and some harrowing sounds. It drops to just some ethereal tones around the half-way mark, along with some vile vocal utterances. The chaos then returns, with a flurry of bass, guitar and drums. "Sons of the Pleiades" opens with a slower pace, and some organ notes. The waters begin to muddy however because of the production is so awful. I'm sure this was the sound they were aiming for, but I like to hear my instruments more clearly.

"Decalogue" is just a mess of a song, with nothing standing out, save for an occasional cymbal strike. Everything else just falls into a swamp of sonority. "Three Holy Coffins" opens with a hypnotizing rhythm of a guitar riff, joined equally by bass and drums. The sound goes low, with that familiar two-step riffing you often hear in the genre. "Genetic Providence" closes the album. It's more of the same, on an album made up of the same...one song after another that sounds just like the one before it.

To this day, I will never understand why Black Metal bands want to stick to formulas that have been done, re-done, and re-done again. The genre is so diverse, and there is room much experimentation. But to just sit back and re-do something that has been done so many times before is baffling to me. There is very little to champion here. That's all I'm going to say about that.
