Obscure Fate - Raven's Call album cover

OBSCURE FATE were formed in 2019 and they are from Paltamo, Finland. Despite being active since 2019 only, there is a longer history around them with Kaleva Kovalainen starting a one man band called PROJECT MIESLATHI back in 2008. OBSCURE FATE are a melodic Death Metal band and "Raven's Call" is their debut EP. It was released via Finnish label Inverse Records that have a number of Metal bands from all genres among their roster. The EP has a length of almost 16 minutes.

OBSCURE FATE deliver a debut that is in principle melodic Death Metal, but with modern Metal elements included. The opener "Black Moon" starts with an extended melodic play of guitars, bass, and drums before the vocals take over. The vocals are a mix between clean and growls on all songs, often the verses performed with the clean vocals while the chorus are done with the growls, most often at the deep end of the guttural range. The tempo of "Black Moon" varies between fast parts and mid-tempo parts and the sound is pretty dominated by the lead guitar sequences. The melodies sound cool, the lead guitar sequences are quite technical and perhaps a bit too playful. "Black Moon" was released as video and the YouTube link is given below.

"Ancient Evil" follows the same pattern, but is a bit more straightforward and has a bit more aggression in terms of guitar riffing. There are tempo changes throughout the song and a break that includes a lead guitar solo which does not fit perfectly to the overall sound. The vocals are again a mix between clean and growls while the clean vocals do fit a lot better to the song compared to the opener.

"Lucid Dream" is the fastest track and one of the highlights on "Raven's Call". The leading melody has some epic parts, the guitar riffing is sharp, the chorus is catchy, and most importantly there are only growling vocals. The lead guitar solo halfway through the song contributes perfectly to the overall theme. The title song is mid-tempo throughout, the guitar riffs are catchy, and so is the chorus section. The guitar melodies are nice and playful, and the extended lead guitar solo fits very well to the song and is another highlight on the EP.

"Raven's Call" is a good debut EP. OBSCURE FATE have a very playful and technical approach to melodic Death Metal and they include modern Metal elements into their sound. The melodies and harmonies often sound a bit familiar to me and "Raven's Call" follows patterns that have their roots in Scandinavian melodic Death Metal. The clean part of the vocals often does not fit to the songs, that is, in my opinion, a downside of the release. OBSCURE FATE show their potential with these four songs and I would have loved to listen to a full-length album. The EP was well produced. It will be interesting to see how OBSCURE FATE develop with future releases after this promising four song outing.
