From the EPK: Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, OBELISK is the brainchild of a mysterious, masked, and anonymous solo artist. A true one-man project, OBELISK writes, performs, and produces all instrumentation, crafting an immersive sonic world that challenges the boundaries between performer and listener. His music is a visceral exploration of emotion, identity, and perseverance in a world that often overlooks the artist's struggle. Well, one thing is sure, as soon as "Brushed By Darkness" sets in and the man in question starts singing in his clear voice, you can really hear that he is from Scotland. His accent is unmistakeable. You won't hear that as clear when he growls or grunts, though.

Musically OBELISK are a bit of Electronic Rock mixed with Alternative Music and sometimes Industrial Metal. Let me warn you; "Brushed By Darkness" definitely is not a typical Metal album. As you have read at the start of this paragraph, OBELISK does require you to cast your net a whole lot wider. You will hear music that is closer to what you would hear at a rave alongside noise that wouldn't go amiss at a metal concert, which is then followed by a mellow sound that would be more fitting to be heard in an intimate setting, like a pub. And it works most of the time. Sometimes it's not completely there (or I just don't understand what OBELISK is trying to achieve), but it never gets properly disjointed, never really flies off the rails. This time I feel that's a good thing, as what "Brushed By Darkness" brings shouldn't be let loose or fired on all cylinders. If it was, it would lose the vulnerability that is being portrayed here.

Even though I am very broad minded musically, and I can listen to a lot of different musical genres and styles, the atmosphere that is being created here doesn't always gel for me. Again from the EPK: OBELISK doesn't just perform — he reveals. His music is both a shield and a voice, pulling listeners into a world where vulnerability meets ferocity, and where every scream, riff, and lyric is drenched in purpose. Well, that might be the case, but to me OBELISK needs to take more time in honing his music arranging skills. It's quite obvious that he has the knowledge and the ability to write good stuff, but he needs to be able to streamline it better than he has done on "Brushed By Darkness". If he does, I'll not hesitate to be the first to congratulate him.
