Nyktmyst
Nyktmyst

This mini-album is planned to be released March 21st, by Iron Bonehead Productions. Black metal, from the Dutch underground, means big expectations. Dutch is the same as the Netherlands, and the Netherlands has an early history in black metal, with bands like Cirith Gorgor, Thronar, Unlord and the mighty Countess. So give Nyktmyst a pre-listening before the release is a (UN)holy honor, and since this band is new on the black metal scene, well it's always something extra to listening to new bands. The opening track "O Viandante" throws me back to the 90s melodic and more raw black metal, the acoustic guitar, and the way it's used makes me think of Vinterland, but also other bands from the 90s era.
Next track "Acoustic" is an acoustic guitar, nothing more, an instrumental track. The track could be a bit longer, it's beautiful. A wild guess, it's based upon folk music, do have has a Malle Sijmen touch? "Noctivagant" is a very melodic track, at the first listening, this track stands out, and you will remember it. I really like the cold sound, on this mini-album, it gives you that mystic sound as Dissection and so many more did use, back in the 90s. The distortion on the guitars, a special sound picture, many bands try this but fail, it's more than a sound, you must have the right feeling, and good musicians. The track has a kind of ominous feeling. "Via Nokturna" is also an instrumental track, made with piano, it works's as a Nocturne. I have that feeling, that classical music is an inspiration for this band. Did notice the same with "Acoustic", a touch of the Baroque music. "Via Nokturna" are very sad and just beautiful. That D minor, makes you think of, darkness, sorrow and actually a bit of haunted touch.
A reflection of the cover for the album. The next track, "Portal Tomb", is another one, that has that 90s black metal touch. A more technical track, I can hear both Sacramentum and early Lord Belial on this one. This short mini-album from Nyktmyst, really keep up with the expectations and will get a solid fan base. I already wait for a full length album. There has been a little change in the black metal underground, more bands aim for the 90s black metal scene, and for me, that is a good thing. And Nyktmyst is so far among the top 3 of those bands.
