"Shrouded in incense and Sulphur smoke, NOITE (Night) is an Experimental Black Metal venture of Gonius Rex, the mastermind behind Portugal's ONIRIK. Inspired by medieval and neo-classical music and based on haunting psalms of penance and compositional whirls, NOITE's style is not meant to sound as your typical metal, yet it is sure to bring a more eloquent craving for the darkness and the occult. "A Cor do Fogo" contains six tracks.

"Noite Eterna" opens the album. Chants open the album, then come some eerie guitar chords and harmonized vocals. This isn't your dad's Black Metal, that is for sure. There are no screams, and no "wall of sound" from the guitars. It has a near jazz feeling at times...free-flowing and loose. At times, it even sounds a tad un-organized, but I am sure every note is intentional. "A Cor do Fogo" open similarly, with chanting and eerie guitar notes. From the perspective of sound, it has a very similar sound to the previous track. The guitars echo in a free-flowing state, and the vocals are chanted.

"No Inferno e na Terra" begins with those echoed guitars again, and in come the harmonized chants. The drumming is quite light in scope. At this point in the album. I'm not even sure that I would call this metal, except for the darkness which runs quietly though the songs. Bass guitars join in the dance. It's the guitar work here that is really fanatical. It's all over the place, but tightly reigned as well. "Centelha" begins the next three tracks, which are a bit shorter. It has a very similar sound as the previous tracks. I'm not even sure why the artist would separate his work into six distinctive tracks, because I'm not sure one stands out over the other.

"Monstro Adormecido" features more of that jazzy, unconnected feeling. It makes me feel at unease, because it's abstract and somewhat hard to follow. I suppose that is the point here, as I navigate the fifth of the six tracks on the album. Somehow, the bass guitar connects loosely with the clean guitars, but in a way that is hard to comprehend. The vocals connect right where they should. "Marcha do Caldeirao" closes the album. It's just a bit darker in scope...a bit more menacing. I picture the guitarist just strumming away made-up chords in a cabin in the woods where he hasn't had contact with the outside world in years. It's an oddly comforting picture.

Overall, I, Voidhanger Records is pretty well known at this point to have some of the weirdest artists out there, and I mean that in a good way, as my mind is always drawn to unique music. Sometimes I get a hit, while other times a bit of a miss, and even other times I am not sure. This is a case of the latter. The music was hard for me to connect with, and I have a wide variety of tastes. As I mentioned above, I'm not even sure that you can call this Metal, let alone Black Metal. Experimental? Absolutely.
