Beware of Gifts

Formed in 2015 with this current line-up this Scottish five some have self release their first E.P ''Beware of Gifts''. NESHIIMA fuse Nu-MetaL and Djent to portray a very modern sound very similar to the likes of DEATH IN MOTION, SKINDRED and ISLANDER.
Personally I found the album to be a tad repetitive, bland and very unoriginal. It reminded me of watching scuzz TV, the same sounding bands repeated on a loop with very little to differentiate between them. This could be because it wouldn't be my style of music but I think I know the difference between a band standing out on their own and one that is blending in with a genre that's becoming quite diluted.
Saying that I found I enjoyed the first track ''Beware Of Gifts From a Dragon Princess'', a melodic intro and after 40 seconds or so breaks into heavy guitars and loud vocals, I could have been forgiven for thinking it was a little taster of what was to come but that's as good as it got for me. I found that around the middle of the E.P on track 3 onwards it felt as the songs were carrying on from the previous tracks which maybe was intended as it is a concept album after all but I thought it just made the songs sound alike with no variety.
On a good note, the vocalist Liam Hesslewood can really belt out a tune, he is very diverse in his vocal style with plenty of variety from clean singing, rap style and screamo. I'm under the impression his talent is lost in NESHIIMA, I can see him eventually branching out, he would be a good fit for a deathcore band.
On a second read of my review I do come across as very critical and some will think it is because of my lack of interest in this particular genre but I stand by my comments referring the E.P to be unoriginal and bland, I'm sure there are plenty out there who will be looking forward to a follow up E.P or album, just not me.
Sorry, NESHIIMA.
