Modern Lieder
Nefesh
NEFESH is a musical project thought and created by Luca Lampis who plays the classical, electric and acoustic guitars, writes all the lyrics and compose the music. "Modern Lieder" is the duo's sixth offering, and contains seven tracks. "Preludio" opens the album. Classical guitars bring the opening sound, a bit melancholy in scope. The sound lingers on your palate with smooth and easy tones akin to a warm breeze. "Every Time" is a bit longer, with tense vocals amidst the serene guitar notes. It moves forward with solemn tones, almost as if the subject is lamenting on the past.
"Orestes" opens with charming acoustical guitar notes and warm vocals. The harmonies in the chorus are simple but very effective at carrying the message. Give the melodies time to sink in, and they will. "Luce Candida" is another solemn offering that seems to be a standard on the album. I'm unsure of the point but I am enjoying the sound so far. The vocals pick up in what I am assuming is Italian, lashing out at the sky above. "Re-Arranged" is apparently a LIMP BIZKIT song, but I am not familiar with the melody. Towards the end, the arrangement becomes more evident in the vocal harmonies.
"Digital Bath" is a DEFTONES cover, and I will admit never liking this band. Their take on the song is fairly original however, and the delicate melodies come through. "Figlio Della Vita" closes the album, yet another overly melancholy song. It swells to an early crescendo and then rides a mellow line the rest of the way. A quick note while I summarize...this is most certainly not Metal nor anything really close to it. But that's OK; I enjoy a melody as much as the next guy. But my impression of the album is that it was simply a mediocre listen. The songs are very elementary in scope, and while at times they do invoke a bit of emotion from the listener, seven downtrodden songs in a row don't make for much of a memorable listening experience.
