NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS’  (what a cool name) “The Mother of Death” is a standout in the realm of melodic thrash and death metal, offering a style that’s not often heard in the scene today. With relentless beats, thrash skank drumming, and intense blast beats, this release carves out its own space, while drawing influences from heavy hitters like KREATOR, as well as more obscure but equally sharp bands like Canada’s INVICTA. It’s an exciting mix of thrash intensity and death metal aggression, but with a touch of melody that keeps things fresh.

The EP's pacing is relentless, with high-energy tracks that never let up, and a slow and nice interlude that’s only preparing for more sheer aggression. The thrashy elements keep your head banging from start to finish, while the death metal aggression adds a layer of heaviness that hits hard. “The Mother of Death” is about atmosphere as much as it is about raw, brutal energy, with moments of blistering solos and unyielding rhythms that remind you of what makes thrash and death metal so timeless. However, despite all the killer riffs and chaotic intensity, the production could have been much better. The sound is a bit too muffled, which hurts the opus’ ability to shine. The rawness might work in certain places, but the lack of clarity diminishes the impact of some of the finer details. You can tell the band has the chops, but the murky production makes it harder for the layers of sound to stand out and do them justice.

Even with that flaw, the EP still delivers a fun, punishing ride that will have you coming back for more. It’s not the cleanest, but it’s still a force to be reckoned with. NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS shows they know how to craft an EP full of ferocity, melody, and enough twists to make it stand out in the crowded world of thrash and death metal.
