It's me again, and it's Italy again. NEBRUS are yet another fine duo from the country, and they currently releasing some truly decent material with "Exta Malorvm" - their freshest and most current full-length studio record. It consists of 9 brutal and malevolent tracks of pure evil Doom-influenced Black Metal - so here we go.
Although the band was formed less than a decade ago (in 2008), they have released 2 full-lengths (including the newest one), a demo, a split, an EP, a single, and finally a compilation. The band's anti-Christian and misanthropic lyrical themes are pretty obvious - especially when judging by the album's artwork, the band's kind-of anonymous members, and the rest of their discography; but let's put everything aside and focus on the music.
The first track "Exta Malorvm I" is nothing else but bizarre, ambient, noise, with some haunting and echoing voices in the background, but okay, that was expected, since an album isn't an actual album without an intro. As expected, the second track, "Dismal Omen" opens up its gates with a slow bass riff, and mad guitar riffs, covered by the echoing vocals of the vocalist herself, and yes, the vocalist seems to be a 'she' - much respect, once again. I'm liked the atmosphere, the mix of the various vocal styles, and if you wonder what they sound like, just try to picture agonising death in a human form, sort-of. The overall atmosphere is pretty Doom-influenced. The vocals are not too loud and continuously remain in the background, however, they are extremely brutal, even though most are scream-based, which is somewhat expected from a Black Metal band.
I'm not trying to be judgmental by saying that everything was expected; in reality I was actually surprised by the rawness of this band! So if you're a fan of nasty, brutal and killer Black Metal, give NEBRUS a listen! They are good!
