It’s clear that many one-man bands came in the early 80s, but the legends helped state BATHORY as the pioneer and one of the most famous acts on this format (besides Quorthon always stated that someone played the drums on the albums on the early days). But it became popular due the second coming of Black Metal in the 90s, and then, many one-man bands appeared on other genres. One good name is from the Finnish act MUTANT SEX DEMON, here with its second full-length, “Cutting Through”.

Mutant Sex Demon himself did the mixing of the songs, trying to have a filthy and organic approach on the sonority. On the other hand, things have a certain level of clarity and definition, allowing the fan to understand what’s being expressed on the songs, and it fits on what’s shown. And the artwork is really excellent and ironic. The album depicts a form of crossing Metal Punk (something in the vein of MOTÖRHEAD, WARFARE, VOI VOD on its early days) with Old School Black Metal. It brings to mind what BATHORY did on the age between “Bathory” and “The Return…” (when the influences of Lemmy’s gang and Hardcore were clear on the band’s music). But it depicts a personal appeal, with energy and a filthy appeal that’s hard to resist to, full of extreme hooks (obviously inherited from Hardcore) .

It's clear the band can take higher flights in the future, because it has potential to do so. But for now, its value is shown on “Filth Metal Warriors”, “Hellbound”, “Bloody Claws of Hatred”, “Rider of Devil’s Tongue”, “Whipmaster”, “Too Fast for Life” and “Vomitose (Bite it)” in a way that’s hard to resist to such combination of screamed vocals, sharp and hooking guitar riffs, and solid rhythms from bass guitar and drums. But above all, “Cutting Through” has an important feature: it’s a fun album to be heard.

After listening to MUTANT SEX DEMON, it’s hard to not become a fan. But as mentioned above, “Cutting Through” shows a great potential to be turned into music in the future.
