Mother Augusta - Fragile album cover

MOTHER AUGUSTA is a Depressive Black Metal project founded in 2013 by Matteo Cordani.  The band's concept concerns emotional suffering, personal experiences, nihilism and loneliness. The name derives from the story of the serial killer Ed Gein and his mother. "Fragile" is the band's debut album, and contains eight tracks.

"Addicted" opens the album, with a slow and steady riff, and an opening scream. It sounds vaguely like Black Metal...not picking up much on the Post-elements. But, the vocals are intense, and the guitars venture out a bit. "Mom" opens with soft clean guitars, leading to a heavy riff with strong accents. The vocals come in hard, and that "emotional suffering" quality is on full display. "The Burning Sun of Despair" opens with depressive clean guitars and a bit of dissonance. It follows a similar pattern to some of the previous tracks...they seem to have found a sound they are comfortable with.

"La notte di Urbino" is a shorter, four-minute song with melody features in the front. The vocals are a juxtaposition and cut hard against the melody, which is quite charming. "Walking in my Shoes" opens with a steady open E note and some energy building in the background. From there, there is an odd combination again of melody with angry vocals. It works somehow. "Fragile" features a longing quality in the music, straddling that fine line between hope and despair. "Just around the Corner" is a short, under three-minute track that features some light lead guitar work and some layering. It's quite alluring in the end, and steals part of your soul.

"In Myself" closes the album. It opens with a hard and aggressive energy, though the pacing is slow. It waxes and wanes from clean passages to harsh ones. Overall, if this album doesn't move you on an emotional level, check your pulse, because you might be dead. It has a powerful combination of delicate melodies with rich, full depressive elements that definitely centers on the elements they mention above. It's also quite unlike anything else that I have heard this year. If you're looking for something a bit off the beaten path, check this album out.
