Sola Fide
Morte France
From their EPK, "MORTE FRANCE is a mystical and warlike project. "Sola Fide" is an EP about faith and strength. The Jerusalem cross in their logo symbolizes the Crusaders, and more broadly, the ascetic and fighting tradition of medieval Christianity. Their debut EP contains five tracks. The title track leads off the assault. The music is fairly standard Black Metal...a wall of guitars, and thunderous drumming. You can also hear the bass guitar, which is a little unusual. The vocals are a bit different...they range from gutturals, to higher ranged shouts, to clean offerings.
"Morte France" begins with a slow and more powerful grind, and the riff ventures out just a bit. The vocals vary again and the sound is not washed out by too many thickened guitar parts. The emotions here are more in line with depression then rage, but there are angry elements also. "Paris Ville Ténèbres" is a shorter song that shows some inventiveness from the band. Clean vocals combine with strings, and a strong electronic rhythm. Harsh vocals are piled on top. "Agape" opens with a depressing, slow groove, and even a little bit of melody. But the chaotic sound comes storming in, with equal sonority in the vocals, guitars and drums.
"La Terre et les Morts" closes the album. It begins with ominous tones before rattling to a fast-moving sound thick with guitars and drums. The vocals go from shouts to gutturals. The sound drops to clean guitars after the half-way mark, with just a smidgeon of melody, before returning with a scream. Overall, this was at least enough of a different listen within the genre to keep it interesting. The vocal variation, combined with uncommon sounds from the guitars provided some nice diversity on the album. Although five tracks is a fairly short release, there is potential here for something better in the future.
