The Power

Moon Shot

Rock 'n' Roll as it must be, but with modern and with an eclectic appeal.
August 8, 2024

No one needs to breed a new Metal or Rock genre, but everyone must find their own way into music, what means to bear a personality. And to create a particular musical personality is something that can done in endless different ways, it’s just to find a light and keep on in such path. And it’s what the quartet MOON SHOT is doing, as heard on “The Power”, their second full-length.

Recorded at E-Studio and Studio Kekkonen (and was mixed on this last one as well), mastered at Chartmakers, “The Power” was produced, recorded and mixed by Julius Mauranen with the band co-producing (and Jussi Ylikoski, the band’s founder, working on the production, mixing and recording as well), David Bottrill working on the production of the vocals, Jyri Riikonen at the recordings as well, and the mastering being signed by Svante Forsbäck, everything sounds as their music demands: simple and organic, but defined and in a way that allows the hearers to understand fully what is musically expressed.

The band plays a form of modern Rock ‘n’ Roll, as they could bring the ways of the genre in the past, a dose of Hard Rock, traces of Alternativa Rock, and blend them all into a boiling cauldron. Their music sounds actual, alive and full of energy, sometimes aggressive, frantic and hooking, on others it bears a scent of melancholy, but always with excellent melodies. It’s an album that’s not hard to be understood, but’s not simple as well due its many layers of feelings. The right is to experience it two or three times for a deeper understanding.

All the songs are very good, but for a first time on their music, “Life is a Killer” (that has some resemblances with latest releases of AMORPHIS on the melodic appeal and deeper feelings, as well as on the guitars arrangements), “Blackened Spiral” (the accessible melodic appeal of this one in unstoppable, and what lovely guitars and vocals), “The Power” (it brings some groove inherited from Funk Metal and Groove Rock, but with a Rock ‘n’ Roll outfit), “Shadow Boxer” (that has a melancholic outfit due its charming melodies, with a thunderous work on bass guitar and drums on the rhythms), “Yes!” (again the combination of melodies with melancholic elements breed a very good song), “Stars are Holes” (an accessible and frantic Rock ‘n’ Roll that seems to be created for radios, with nasty vocals laying on catchy instrumental parts) and “Deep Hood”. But again: don’t be lazy and have a full experience on “The Power”.

MOON SHOT is really a promising name in Alternative Rock ‘n’ Roll, but throw away labels and enjoy “The Power”. It seems that they still have some aces hidden in their sleeves.
