Unpredictable

Moloema

"Unpredictable" lives up to its name with tracks that take listeners on a journey that is anything but predictable.

Those who know me know I'm a sucker for awesome doom/stoner rock and metal, with bands like Doublestone and Witchcraft occupying my playlists, but now another amazing band is joining their ranks. Moloema, hailing from Greece, have crafted an amazing full-length album, "Unpredictable," featuring drummer Aris Giannopoulos (Villagers of Ioannina City), who was most certainly born to sit behind the throne and lay down some tasty drum lines. "Unpredictable" is filled with insanely catchy riffs from guitarists Giorgos Tasoulas and Pantelis Floudas. The guitar work blends perfectly with Kostas Voulgaris' vocals, adding an Olympian-level dynamic to Moloema's sound, being rounded out nicely by the heavy low end of bassist Giorgos Droudes. From the beginning of "Unpredictable," listeners are introduced to a band so tight you'd think they've played together for thirty years or more.

"Unpredictable" is filled with many killer moments from the crushingly heavy and faster-paced track "Desire Dead," showing everyone that doom doesn't have to be slow to be doom; it just needs to be heavy. The riffs in "Desire Dead" blend the doom style with elements of NWOBHM and punk, making this track a unique, addictive monster that will keep listeners coming back for more. Equally as addictive to listen to is the track "Mephisto," which takes me back to memories of lava lamps, tie-dye, and peace posters covering a hazy room as my friends and I sway and headbang to the music like Otto Mann from The Simpsons.

"Arrow" ends the album on a powerful but melancholy note. "Arrow" is a strong ballad that could find a home in a dark, harrowing moment in a Hollywood blockbuster. The layered emotions in "Arrow" wrap up "Unpredictable" in a perfect way that so few bands can pull off so well. "Unpredictable" lives up to its name with tracks that take listeners on a journey that is anything but predictable, and has to be one of my favourite debut albums of the last decade. I'm looking forward to seeing what Moloema does next.
