Merlock - That Which Speaks album cover

"That Which Speaks" is the new EP release from MERLOCK (2017),  a psychedelic stoner metal band from Spokane, Washington USA - or are they Post-Avant Stonergaze 'n' Roll? Without one song clocking in at less than 7 minutes the music may be described as lettin' it all hang out *my brothers and sisters*, and let the doom-times roll.

... sever the roots with your own hand ... At 8 minutes and 38 seconds, 'Idolon' is one grand vision opening of a spun-out guitar and drum riff grudge with vocals of somebody who hasn't had their morning coffee. The lyrics are pretty vacant and bleak even though they bop into MUSE melody in a few spots. 'Prolapse' manages an almost upbeat mien with the same downcast black metal lyrics complete with evil shrieking and a few lean TORCHE nuances that are repeated dynamically throughout the song.

... wandering through this world barren of true light ... the moon eats shadows on a sun it swallows whole ... 'Vessel' gets rigged up from the start to a troglodyte bass line and somewhat subdued sandpaper death vocals specked with non-demon voiced singing. This music is meant to elicit reaction with disparate movements of voice and circular repeated string lines, so this has an almost industrial-death facet, a looped idea glazed and grazed by melodic and abrasive elements.

... i am the mouth which eats tar from your heart ... 'Condemnation' has a VENOM groove broken up with spacey metal astral-burn before X-ing out on fiendish registers. These are some lengthy tunes presented on "That Which Speaks" which orbit Death Metal and post-apocalyptic Rawk to my ears, and the world seems right with these long form efforts. I think the lads realized their heavier than regret vision honestly, so there's a point for that ... although "That Which Speaks" ain't no bottle of happy pills and stays on the same riff-go-round a bit too long for mis gustos.  Check it.
