Fiber Tormentum

Matt Miller

The songs on “Fiber Tormentum” are rather good, and make for very interesting listening sessions.

When the piano starts for the song "Descent Into Violence" you just don't know what you will get. When that changes into a guitar riff, you have the feeling that you have stumbled on a Thrash Metal artist. But hey presto, then the Death Metal rhythms set in, together with the vocals, and you realise that you're getting closer. I write that because MATT MILLER is classed as a Technical Death Metal artist. And of course, all of a sudden those elements start rearing themselves and you feel that you have arrived at the right spot. MATT MILLER has only been going since 2020, but since then he has been quite active, especially in 2021, when he was able to release three studio albums! He took it a little bit easier in 2022, when there were only two records that came out. Oh, and an EP! The fact that this guy from Salem in Oregon, USA, has had us waiting a full three years before coming up with "Fiber Tormentum" is rather unique. What I like about "Fiber Tormentum" is that this is a real band effort, whereas all the earlier releases were actually solo endeavours. On top of that this also is the first set of recordings that is blessed with vocals, as the people who knew about MATT MILLER were expressing their desire to hear what his music would sound when some appropriate vocals would be added. I mentioned that the band plays Technical Death Metal, and that title is mainly due to the fact that Matt Miller himself just can't stop shredding his guitar from start to finish. That does make it a lot more difficult for a lot of people to appreciate, but if you listen through all his guitar masturbation you will notice that the man is quite capable of writing rather goods and compelling songs. You just need to give yourself time to work your way through all the layers thrown up by all the musicians. It does help that MATT MILLER has a good sounding and versatile singer in Biko Wright. He is able to draw your attention in such a way that the shredding is pushed a little into the background, making the interaction between the two become even more evident. As I mentioned, the songs on "Fiber Tormentum" are rather good, and make for very interesting listening sessions. What I am thankful for is that this MATT MILLER album is only 30:09 minutes long. If it would have been longer, I think it would have been a case of overkill. Now it is just enough to get used to, and certainly enough to wish for more.
