Madra - Bittersweet Temptation to Disappear Completely album cover

MADRA is an "experimental unification of Doom and Black Metal, about the struggles of pre-modernity and the failures of the simple life our ancestors lived." "Bittersweet Temptation to Disappear Completey" is the Hungarian's debut album, and contains four tracks. "Depart Pt. 1" opens the album, with the sounds of cold, swirling winds, and some brief clean guitar notes. There is an ominous feeling in the background, something is building. Some vocal chants come into play as well. The song is very effective at creating this somber feeling.

"Into the Long Fade" is a nine-minute beast. It opens with crushing guitar tones and some Black Metal vocals. The combination of the Doomy elements with Black Metal vocals just works. Some piano notes provide a change of sound, and brings more Doom to the table. The riff varies with some clean guitar tones as well. I really like the different elements complimenting one another here. Towards the end, the sense of utter annihilation really comes through. "Where once She Stood" opens with soft piano notes and a despondent sound. The vocals come through as whispers for the most part, while the distorted riff hangs in the balance. The piano notes carry most of the melody. It's sad and pretty at the same time. It picks up in pace and then ends on a solemn note.

"Depart Pt. 2" is another lengthy track to close the album. It takes a while to build, and when it does, these layers keep hitting you like waves crashing over you, one after another. It's a brilliant way to work up a song. The sound drops nearly altogether around the half-way mark, with whispered vocals and simulated strings. It picks back up with keys and drums and then a crushing guitar riff. There is a long fadeout at the end. Overall, although only four short tracks, the album seems to capture your imagination pretty easily and I love the plethora of various sounds here, presented with this synergy that is often missing from the genre. The cold, sterile sound is quite understated.
