Yeah, their name is cheesy and yeah, their logo brings in mind all these Thrash acts from the 80's but don't be fooled: Lucifixion play an interesting mixture of Death Metal and atmospheric music.
Lucifixion was born in 1990 and their first release was a six track Demo titled Born Into Death. In 1996 the band recorded their debut album, Indulge In The Macabre. Unfortunately key members departed after that release, so they managed to record something new only in 2005 with this EP that works as a taste of the band's second full length album. Let's also mention that in the past the band has supported on stage acts such as Cannibal Corpse, Sinister and Cynic among many others.
The Death parts of Lucifixion vary in speed and technique (from fast / raw moments to more slower technical parts) but fail to impress. They are well written but they can't be considered as a refreshing touch. To make things simple: we've heard this before. However the atmospheric parts of the band are really interesting. In order to define these atmospheric parts, bring in mind the mid period of Opeth with striking female vocals. Indeed the voice of Maria is deep and passionate, maybe not so dominant like other vocalists but indeed she leaves an imprint with her performance. On the other hand, I can't say the same thing about the male vocals: typical, uninspired, flat to be more precise.
In conclusion, this three track EP really opened my appetite for more. I don't know if a full length release from the band will manage to keep a high level but I am sure that it will be worthy of the time spent on an listening.
