Limos - Tales of the White Eye album cover

LIMOS is a Melodic Death Metal band from Kajaani, Kainnu, Finland. They were formed in 2017 by Eppu and Eetu Herala and this is their second EP. They released an EP back in 2018 called ''Watching the Winds''. For people that don't know, Limos is the goddess of starvation in Greek mythology.

It's obviously not easy to judge a Melodic Death album (well...EP) that is only twenty minutes long. It really takes a more specific approach to realize how they take things in another direction and are able to keep the listener entertained.

In a world where melodic death metal increasingly is becoming increasingly stale, they bring together lots of classic Scandinavian influences to create a thoroughly enjoyable album. Whilst nothing groundbreaking is on offer, the band are clearly all talented individuals; brother guitarists Eppu and Eetu Herala provide a plentitude of gloomy doom riffs and melodic harmonies, and the harsh vocal contrast provided by Eirik Manne helps expand the emotional range the album is able to encompass. There's also lots of variation between full blown metal riffs, crushing doom and hints of Modern Metal.

One does, however, experience a significant amount of déjà vu when getting through the album. It's not that LIMOS clearly love a number of bands of the genre like OMNIUM GATHERUM and INSOMNIUM although that does become very obvious very quickly. It's more the fact that, for ever cracking riff or melodic lead, there's one that you're pretty sure you heard two songs ago. This is detrimental to songs like "Surullisten Jarvien Maa"; I can't focus on the cracking chorus because I'm still trying to work out which other song the main riff is also in. I felt the riffs were quite repetitive even for such a short album persay. Unfortunately, my inability to speak Finnish probably doesn't help this situation, as the lyrics to tend to all sound similar (although, I hasten to add, I'm sure they are for the most part as poignant as the music is).

''Tales of the White Eye'' is a good album to put on if you just want some melancholic melodeath, but don't want to focus too intently upon it. The melodies will sooth your angry mind and take you to a far off Scandinavian forest, and they won't break you out of your relaxation with an unexpected breakdown or intricate technical solo. Yet for a Melodic Death album, a lot of space is left to the musicians and the singer is not omnipresent like a lot of bands in the genre. The musicians shine more than I'd thought they do, well because I had some preconceived notions before listening to the EP.
