Visions of Collapse
Liminal Shroud
From Bandcamp, “Cleansing in collapse, solace in emergence from tunnels of psychic distortion, sanctuary in the dissolution of the spirit, and a salute once again to the worthlessness of it all, “Visions of Collapse” is LIMINAL SHROUDs” new offering of surging, evocative, and forward-thinking Black Metal.” The album has five lengthy songs, and “Nocturnal Phosporesence” is first. The opening tones are quite solemn, until the heavier distorted guitars are ushered in with a scream. It takes a darker tone following some meaty bass notes, but the entire song so far is depressive and hopeless. There is also an alternating pattern between moments of anger and moments of despair.
“Nucleonic Blight” begins with clean guitars and more depressive feelings, especially from the whispered vocals. Harsh vocals usher in a more angry sound, but again, those feeling of hopelessness persist and grow stronger. “Resolve” is just as the title sound…an inner battle that you are determined to win, but when your opponent is yourself, it’s hard to navigate this. The battle is with your psyche, and the vocals reflect this, as they are tortured and at times, raging. “Malaspina” is the shortest on the album, at four minutes consisting of dejected tones, especially in the clean vocals. The harsh vocals paint a different picture however, of hate spewed anger and torment.
“The Carving Scythe” closes the album. It has a sturdy but depressing backbone, with peaks of rage along the way. It plows straight through until a softer passage in the middle, with time for reflection. The torture then continues. Overall, this was an excellent album that reflected the themes listed above of the dissolution of spirit and the worthlessness of life. Some days, we all have these feelings, and the album hits you hard in that manner.
