Finding information about LILLI was quite the undertaking. For this review I received nothing else but the music. So, no cover, no bio, nothing at all. That leaves internet, but except for the social media pages of the band that also was a dud. This means I am going out on a limb to say that this is a Finnish band, due to the name of the guitarist, and the Finnish website that Facebook sends you to.
Thankfully explaining the music is a lot simpler. Pure and unadulterated Heavy Metal with female vocals. Nothing more, nothing less. Released by themselves on September 30th 2022, you can access and acquire it through the bands Bandcamp page. But back to the description of the music. Like I mentioned, pure Heavy Metal, with a few keyboards, but most of all good guitar work.
Do not expect any high-flying musical shenanigans, as this is quite straight forward and simple in build. The same goes for the lyrics. They are quite frank, there is no room for misinterpretation. Is that a problem? Not really, although the danger it presents is that a whole album of this kind of music might have it all sound too similar, making the whole listening experience rather boring.
I will not say that this is the case on "Kintsugi", but I also will not be able to deny that LILLI hasn't escaped that feat either. The reason I put it like this, is that due to many changes in intensity and tempo, the songs stand on their own and are strong and powerful. It is when you put the album "Kintsugi" on repeat that you start to realise that you are mixing up the songs, which makes this an album that you shouldn't play over and over again. And I can't help but feel that this would not have been the intention of LILLI.
To me that means that the current youth will be more than happy with "Kintsugi", as a lot of them have the attention span of a daffodil, so if they hear these songs in between others, they will love it. On the other side of the spectrum you have those who love to listen to an album from start to finish, like me. They are okay if they listen to it once and then put it aside. For me personally, once I get to listen to it more often, I can't help the boredom setting in. Sorry!
