Elevate
Landfall
From their record label's website: "Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to present the sophomore album, "Elevate" from Brazilian melodic rockers LANDFALL. Hailing from Curitiba, Brazil, the band features singer Gui Oliver, guitarist Marcelo Gelbcke, bassist Thiago Forbeci, and drummer Felipe Souzza. The band's delightful Melodic Rock/AOR sound can best be described as falling somewhere between classic melodic rock, a là JOURNEY, and slightly heavier influences, such as classic era DOKKEN, WHITE LION, and EXTREME. The album has eleven songs.
"Never Surrender" is the first. The sound is energetic, and the vocalist has a raspy edge to his voice. The chorus is nice and full with backing harmonies. It definitely reminds me of the glory days of the 80's, when the genre flourished. "Two Strangers" is a bit slower and has a heavier bottom end. The melodies in the chorus are solid as well. "Rescue Me" is the tender song that you have been waiting for...admit it. The riff is energetic and hopeful, and the melodies shine. The guitar solo and audible bass notes are also fantastic, and I get a bit of a JOURNEY vibe in this song.
"Heroes Are Forever" is another charming winner. One thing that the band has done well to this point is developing memorable melodies, and this song is no exception. "Elevate" is a mid-tempo rocker with a bit of an attitude. Smooth keyboards accentuate the sound in the background, and the jumpy riff shows a band with seasoned songwriting leanings. "Feels Like Summer" is a feel good song that harkens back to your youth, when the summer had real meaning. School was out, the weather was warm, and you didn't have a care in the world. "Shadows of Love" is a faster moving jaunt, through green fields, bright glens, and fond memories of your youth. It's another solid winner, with memorable melodies and a great vocal performance. I get a bit of DANGER DANGER magic in this song.
"The Wind" is the obligatory power ballad on the album. I say that with my tongue in my cheek. One thing that many people might be surprised to hear about is that us Metalheads who were in high school in the 80's looked forward to these ballads. "Chance to Destiny" closes the album, with a hard rocking and melodic vibe. Capturing the wondrous melodies of the past is a difficult thing, because they have all been done before, and many times over. This band does a nice job of it, however. They have a great singer, with a calming but engaging voice, as well as an excellent set of musicians. This was a charming album with a memorable outlook.
