KURGAN is a Danish Melodic Death Metal band formed in the city of Fårevejle in 2014. The band has two releases under its belt, their demo "Kurgan" was released in 2016 and their first studio album "Yggdrasil Burns" is to be released in 2019 and which That's what we talk about today.
The first song "Hellstorm" begins with a calm introduction, but soon it gives way to fast and melodic guitars, heavy drums and bass and aggressive vocals. The song shows the characteristics of the band and has a lot of guitar melodies. "The Fall Of Asgard" is the next song, and it starts with a riffing guitar that resembles Thrash Metal a bit. The song has good guitar melodies and honestly, it reminded me a lot of AMON AMARTH. It is a good song.
The album's title track "Yggdrasil Burns" starts off heavy, with aggressive guttural vocals, a consistent and accurate drums and bass. There is a good guitar melody in this song and it is possible to sing. The solos are also fun. The next song is called "Send Me A Raven" and begins with a drums that is soon completed by good guitar riffs. It's one of my favorites on the album and you'll start bang your head as soon as the first chords sound. The guitar solo is very inspired, being well executed. The song still has an acoustic guitar part and a calmer guitar solo that helped complete the whole ambience.
The song "Kill The Enemy" begins with a riff worthy of singing in battle, you will instantly imagine yourself marching to a battlefield. The band kept the same formula of the previous songs, using heavy riffs, aggressive guttural vocals and a precise drums and bass. "Rise" starts with clean guitar tones and a raining noise in the background. The music is a bit progressive, as the instruments gradually come in and add their elements to the song.
The next song "Für Lise" starts the same as "Rise" and takes the same aggressive direction throughout the song. "Evil Dead" and "Regicide The King Has Fallen" are aggressive songs and they kept the same formula used throughout the album, they are aggressive, heavy and has fast guitar riffs, bass and drums. The last song on the album is called "Over The Lands Into The Sea" and it starts off like the other songs, but it sounds more crafted and the ending is very interesting, where they used acoustic guitars to develop the end of the album and slowly ending all the aggressiveness that was shown in the album.
Overall, KURGAN has good songs, but they are common and I often thought I was listening to AMON AMARTH. The musicians are very good and perform their instruments with excellence, but I believe the album may sound just like the bands out there.
