Mortem Solis
Krisiun
KRISIUN hailing from Ijui, Brazil were formed in 1990. The three brothers are arguably among Brazil's most important Death Metal musicians and "Mortem Solis" is their 12th full-length release. One live album, one EP, two DVDs, and four splits complete the impressive discography of the trio. "Mortem Solis" was recorded at Family Mob Studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis at Audiohammer Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. The album has a length of almost 41 minutes, and it was released via German Metal label Century Media Records.
The Brazilian Death Metal legends start their new album with "Sworn Enemies", a pummeling track with grim guitar riffing and blast-beat attacks at insane pace. The deep lying growls sound brutal. There are changes in speed and rhythm throughout the track, where frantic speed and relentless drumming switch with a lead guitar driven up-tempo sound. "Sworn Enemies" includes a short Thrash Metal inspired part as well. It is a perfect opening of the album. "Serpent Messiah" starts with a huge powerful riff, before the madness of speed and hammering continues. The song is entirely driven by the guitar, where the vocals follow the guitar riffing. The lead guitar solo is direct and not overly technical, while the bass lines are almost percussive. "Swords Into Flesh" continues with the blast-beat driven pummeling, but there are a lot of subtle twists in rhythm at an incredible speed. Some of the guitar parts have a few oriental vibes at times. The lead guitar solo is short, aggressive, and very contributing to the overall dark atmosphere of the track. "Swords Into Flesh" is the official video release and the YouTube link is given below.
"Necronomical" starts with a crunching bass line at stomping rhythm and aggressive and tight riffing, all supported by the double-bass drums. The riffing during mid-tempo part is blood-freezing and so are the vocals. The mid-tempo does not last long and is soon replaced by blast-beat attacks and riffing at high pace. The sound of "Necronomical" is different compared to the previous songs, it has tempo changes ranging from mid-tempo to a fast pace, but it all sounds more controlled, and the track is much darker than most songs on the album. "Tomb Of The Nameless" starts with an instrumental part, before it transitions into another blast-beat hammering. KRISIUN understand it perfectly to keep their sound fresh by changing tempo and the riffing. Despite all the twists, the guitars find their way back to the initial riff. "Tomb Of The Nameless" is pretty much driven by the guitars.
After the Folk inspired inter-lude "Dawn Sun Carnage", "Temple Of The Abattoir" starts with another oriental inspired riffing, before it transitions into another bludgeoning track which is dominated by the blast-beats and the lead guitar parts. The vocals follow the melodies of the guitars. "Temple Of The Abattoir" is one of the few tracks without a lot of twists and turns and at the end, the song comes back to the initial oriental melodic theme. The riffing of both "War Blood Hammer" and "As Angels Burn" is very powerful. "War Blood Hammer" starts with the lead guitars and transitions into a pummeling after the lead guitar solo. On the other hand, "As Angels Burn" does not waste any time and comes straight to the point. While the riffing of "As Angels Burn" is direct and brutal alongside the drumming, some of the riffing in "War Blood Hammer" contains a few progressive elements. The final "Worm God" represents the best elements of the KRISIUN sound on the album: the characteristic instrumental introduction, the transitions into a pummeling driven by the blast-beats, the aggressive riffing, the rhythm changes, occasional parts of Thrash Metal influenced riffing, and the brutal growls. A very good way to finish "Mortem Solis".
KRISIUN do what KRISIUN do best: delivering excellent and authentic trademark Death Metal sound. "Mortem Solis" is a 40 minutes hammering at high level, where the guitars, drums, bass, and vocals equally contribute. KRISIUN keep the album fresh and dynamic by introducing complexity in the song structures and variation in tempo and rhythm. The songwriting is very mature, and the album is very well produced. "Mortem Solis" is one of those Death Metal albums that should belong to the collection of every fan, and I would not be surprised, if the album is ranked among the Death Metal albums of 2022.
