We all live in the time of technology. Internet is in our everyday lives and its times that you feel that there's something missing when we do not have it. The time has come for major Rock bands like JOURNEY to choose singers through Youtube.
The ghost of Steve Perry will always haunt this band. Perry is, with no doubt, one of the greatest voices in Rock music and to replace him is a hard task. Steve Augeri did a great job but he gave up after 8 years with JOURNEY, Jeff Scot Soto's arrival to the band can only described as debacle. But in a time that everybody was thinking for JOURNEY's permanent break up, Neal Schon watched Filipino singer Arnel Pineda singing JOURNEY songs with his band on Youtube.com. The band recorded the brand new double CD, Revelation, and they are already on the road.
The first disc includes 10 brand new songs, plus Faith In The Heartland that they re-record, taken from their previous album Generations with Augeri on vocals. From the first song Never Walk Away the JOURNEY-AOR mentality is here, full of melody, perfect harmonies and exceptional backing vocals. Pineda proves he is up to the task with a high pitched clear voice that could match Perry's hunger for music back in the 70's and 80's. Like A Sunshower simulates the original JOURNEY sound with the mellow guitar chords and sweet piano on the background; the old-school JOURNEY fans will be thrilled with this one. Change For The Better and Wildest Dream deliver a great rockin' mood and some amazing solo work from Cain on keyboards and Schon on guitar, proving they are more wise as the time grows up their music.
JOURNEY showed us what pain sounds like and the ballad After All These Years is talking directly to your heart. Don't try to filter the feeling with pointless questions. This is the real thing. And questions fill your head, but you are not the only one that wonders. Where Did I Loose Your Love? follows to finish you up, amazing melody, and not the happy kind you expect from the AOR up-bit songs. A song that wonders ...How can I make you stay?... and regrets ...Still regret the night you walked away...; I know it's a big thing to say, but this song matches the pain that Separate Ways generates. What I Needed makes your agony even bigger, your soul will never rest. Neal Schon produces an amazing heartbreaking solo and Pineda gives a beautiful melodic performance, you must feel it.
Revelation closes with the rocker What It Takes To Win, the ballad Turn Down The World Tonight and the instrumental piece The Journey (Revelation), which has some Indian mood that takes on a true journey with Schon's amazing guitar sound.
The second disc of Revelation includes JOURNEY's major hits like Faithfully, Any Way You Want It, Separate Ways and many more that the band did re-record with their current line-up. The result is not bad, actually is really good but I'm gonna stick with the original versions because the feeling that JOURNEY had back then with these particular songs is unique.
(Grigoris adds):The Revelation release also includes a live DVD featuring the current line-up's March 8, 2008 concert in Las Vegas. Truth is you do not expect to see something convincing, initially, due to the fact that Pineda has not cut his teeth enough with the rest of the band onstage. Poor you/us...Their performance is exceptional, the new singer kicks major ass and it's obvious the whole band has been lifted up in terms of mood with this new addition in the lineup.
Revelation double CD plus DVD is a release that true lovers of Hard Rock/ AOR music should add to their collection, so that you can put it in when heartbreak kicks in your lives. JOURNEY is a shelter and we're going to get under it, until the rain stops.
