Inverted Matter - Detach album cover

INVERTED MATTER hails from various countries from around the world. Predominantly Italian, this underground Death metal outfit even uses different members while performing live. Their sound is extremely raw but is accentuated by the masterful drum work of Mike Smith. The band has released their debut album "Detach" through the help of Lethal Scissor Records. The focal point of the band is heavy hitting, powerful drums that are met with the intensity of the other instruments. The vocal work gives you the feel of an early 90s Death metal.

"The Mark" opens up "Detach" with a powerful, doomy guitar riff that breaks into repetitive, speedy chords. The drum work is solid throughout the album and you can really get a sense of that from the opening track. "Foreigner" gives us an intense, blast beating composition. The guitar work on this track are not too complex to really let the insane drum skills come to the forefront of the music. There are some added guitar solos in the song that do give it an almost melodic tone from time to time. The track does slow down towards the end bringing back the doom laden vibe that is heard early on in the album. "Experimental" begins with some discordant tones that give the track an uneasy feel to the beginning. The guitar solos that mix into the track almost feel out of place but do somewhat mesh together with the opening riffs. The vocal work is subdued in this track and could have been more prominent to balance the sound better but they were decent.

"Missing Link" begins with some instrumental buildup that fades in. The main riff in this track is strong but again the balancing issues do take away from the overall sound quality of the recording. This track is the best song on the album because of the riffs and guitar solos that run through the song. "Singularity" opens up with one minute of full silence before fading in with an eerie chime sound that is then blended with a dark, creepy guitar riff. This riff runs through mos t of the track and then just fades out at the end. It is an interesting way to end the album and for me, that worked. It is just enough to give closure to the end of the album and leave you wondering about the rest of the tracks.

INVERTED MATTER did show off some good aspects of their talents with "Detach". The drum work was definitely well done and was the main focus throughout the entire album. Sometimes we can forget about how good a drummer is because their work can get lost in all of the other instrumentals. The vocals were good at points, but I feel like the production quality became a problem later on in the album. The solo work of the guitars were decent but at the same time some of the solos felt out of place and, well, detached. I don't know if this was done intentionally to give the album a detached sound, but if so, then it worked. For me, while this album did have some good points to it, it was a hard one to get through because of the production quality and detached feeling. I would still give this album a chance if Death Metal is in your realm of musical taste.
